HPMSM demonstration plant, South Africa – update

Name of the Project
HPMSM demonstration plant.
Location
Johannesburg, in Gauteng, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
Canadian company Giyani Metals Corp subsidiary Giyani Metals South Africa (GMSA).
Project Description
The demonstration plant will be capable of producing up to 600 kg/d of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM) crystals.
The Johannesburg demonstration plant has also produced high-purity manganese oxide (HPMO) for testing under Charge CCCV’s (C4V’s) Digital DNA Supply Chain Qualification Program. Giyani has developed a process flowsheet that enables production of two battery-grade manganese products, HPMSM and HPMO.
HPMSM and HPMO are battery-grade manganese products used in cathode precursor materials for lithium-ion batteries deployed in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Technical and operating data from the demonstration plant are being incorporated into the definitive feasibility study (DFS) for Giyani’s K.Hill battery-grade manganese project in Botswana.

Planned Start/End Date
Phase 2 testing of HPMO produced from the demonstration plant is expected to be completed within 60 days of Giyani’s May 5, 2026, announcement, after which progression to Phase 3 is expected to follow. Phase 3 is expected to take about six months after Phase 2 has been completed.
Latest Developments
Giyani has reported successful interim results from Phase 2 of C4V’s Digital DNA Supply Chain Qualification Program for HPMO produced at the Johannesburg demonstration plant. HPMO from the plant previously satisfied C4V’s Phase 1 qualification criteria.
As part of Phase 2 testing, C4V has assembled multiple single-layer pouch cells using Giyani’s HPMO. Interim results indicate that the material meets C4V’s quality assurance standards. Giyani has also reported that electrode density is comparable to baseline electrodes, rate testing has demonstrated consistent rate and cycling stability across a range of C-rates, and capacity retention is comparable with baseline cells during long cycling.
Phase 2 testing is continuing until the cells reach 80% retained capacity, which is expected within 60 days of the May 5, 2026, announcement. Phase 3 will involve multilayer pouch-cell testing and is expected to take about six months after Phase 2 is completed.
Giyani has shipped both HPMO and HPMSM to multiple potential partners for testing as part of offtake qualification processes. The technical and operating data generated from the demonstration plant are being integrated into the K.Hill DFS, which Giyani says remains on track for release during the current quarter.
